Cole Carter (Zac Efron) is a 23-year-old former music star and DJ fighter in the electronic dance music (EDM) scene with a dream of becoming a great record producer. Constantly reminding himself of his plan to reach the top, he’s made up of three things: a laptop, some talent, and a clue. Cole lives with boyfriend Mason (Jonny Weston) and they usually hang out with friends Ollie (Shiloh Fernandez) and Squirrel (Alex Shaffer) in his hometown in the San Fernando Valley. With the help of Mason and his highly promoted friends on college campus, Cole finally gets a show as a DJ at a local nightclub where he meets the headliner, a DJ who was once an innovator, James Reed (Wes Bentley). After his introductions, Cole finally meets James while he is sharing a cigarette. James invites Cole to a party where Cole begins to hallucinate because the cigarette they shared contained phencyclidine (PCP). The next morning, Cole wakes up at James ‘house, where he introduces Sophie (Emily Ratajkowski), James’ friend and personal assistant, who is voluntarily taking him home.

After the revenue from the event doesn’t meet their expectations, they reach out to their friend Paige (Jon Bernthal), who runs a real estate solutions company. The four are working. James later asks Cole to hang up at his home party, a paid show. After James explains the main mechanics of DJing to Sophie, he sees Cole’s potential interrupted by his three friends who arrive at the party. After an argument breaks out between Mason and one of James’ guests, James forgives Cole for his friend’s actions. From there, James takes Cole as his apprentice. Back in San Fernando, James invites Cole to watch an MMA fight with him and Sophie. One day, Cole and Paige meet Tanya Romero (Alicia Coppola), whose house is mortgaged. During the negotiations, Paige buys her house and rents it back to her with the intention of selling it quickly for a substantial price, which irritates Cole.
